“Pervert," the woman said, nudging the man's chair with her hip. "She just got here, and you're spying on her already?"

"Ah," the man said, sitting at his desk. He used a mouse to change the image on the screen. "So, you saw the ski boat come back? I thought you were asleep."

"I was sunbathing," she said, putting her hand on his shoulder and leaning forward, her filmy robe hanging open. "That's not her. Why are you watching him sleep? Wait … is that the psycho?"

"Yes. Ricky Lucas," he said. "I wish you wouldn't use that word. Its meaning has been corrupted by improper use in the media."

"They just got here. Why's he asleep, do you suppose?" she asked, noticing that the man was studying her reflection in his computer monitor. She gave his shoulder a squeeze.

"I had Johnson drug him before they brought him aboard. He's unpredictable and dangerous. I wanted to make sure they didn't have to do him any damage. I want him intact for later."

She leaned in close to the screen. "Can you zoom in on his face?"

He clicked a button on the mouse and scrolled to the left as Ricky Lucas's face filled the screen. "Like that?"

"Yes. Is that blood all over his face?" she asked.

"Yes, and tattoos."

"I see that, but how did he get bloody? I thought you told them not to hurt him."

"It's not his blood."

"Whose, then?"

"Jesse White's. And his friend's."

"What happened? Did they have a disagreement before Johnson got there?"

"Perhaps," he said, with a chuckle. "Jesse told me he had some trouble with Lucas. Lucas wanted to get at Barrera from the time they snatched her."

"I'm surprised Lucas didn't kill him then," the woman said. "Why did he wait?"

"For one thing, Jesse was one of the toughest guys I've ever seen. He was a real brawler. Lucas wouldn't have had a chance against him in a fight. I know Jesse beat up Lucas at least once over Barrera."

"How did he get the upper hand over Jesse and Jimbo, then?"

"I told Lucas he could have Jesse and Jimbo as a reward once the launch showed up. Jimbo was no match for Lucas, and I told Johnson to shoot Jesse when they boarded."

"When did you make that offer to Lucas?"

"Before I sent him to Jesse to begin with."

"But you said he was unpredictable. How did you know he'd wait?"

"He's like a well-trained dog; for whatever reason, he does what I tell him — most of the time. From what Jesse told me, though, Barrera was too big a temptation for him. Jesse had to protect her."

"So what happened when the launch got there?"

"Well, I had told Johnson it was okay for Lucas to do whatever he wanted with the other two. Johnson kneecapped Jesse, and Lucas took him and Jimbo below into the aft cabin for a few minutes. Johnson left him alone with them until they stopped screaming. Then he drugged Lucas."

"Why? You said you told him he could have them."

"Lucas doesn't have a pause button.
